As a Roman Catholic parish, the Downtown Chapel celebrates Mass daily. Our faith community is an eclectic group, bringing people together from all walks of life and parts of the city. It is in our diversity, and the honesty that it offers us, that we are able to experience and acknowledge our need for God, both communally and personally. Worshiping here is not clean and tidy Catholicism, but a lived reality among people who most need the message of the Church and the healing touch of our friend, Brother Andre Bessette, CSC.

All sacraments are celebrated by our community, with weekly opportunities for the community to receive Anointing of the Sick, which takes place in front of our icon of Christ the Healer. For people interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA begins each October, and our parish continually prays for the needs and intentions of the community through an ongoing prayer tree.

Dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness, our parish's Community Programs are dynamic expressions of our faith in action. Whether someone is in need of food, clothing, hygiene, bus tickets, or just a friend, that person is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Our focus on hospitality allows us to focus on each person, rather than just the need of that person, and begin to walk with them towards positive transitions and engagement in community.
Our Community Programs, which include our Hospitality Center, Food Pantry, and Br. Andre Cafe, are only possible because of generous donations and volunteers. We also benefit from amazing community partners that help us to address almost any need.
However, service alone will not make change, which is why we have an active Peace & Justice Committee, as well as staff members who are always looking to advocate for our guests as individuals and for systemic changes that address underlying poverty issues.

The Downtown Chapel provides a vast array of education opportunities. For people who are interested in becoming Catholic, we offer the Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) beginning each October. There are also a number of opportunities for faith sharing, including our Recovery and Faith Mass, where people are given the oportunity to share concerns, struggles, and joys around the recovery process, and our Faith Sharing Group that meets after the 10am Mass on Sundays to reflect on the day's Gospel.
For people looking for an intentional experience of prayer, service, and reflection, we offer our Personal Poverty Retreats for adults and Downtown Chapel Connects for students.
Our community has also become a place of great formation for students from both Portland-area schools, and universities around the country. Additionally, we offer two formation-based staff positions for recent college graduates: our Saint Andre Fellowship and Jesuit Volunteer.
